During my 1000 Day Holiday:
- I was hospitalised for 2 weeks with cerebral malaria.
- I popped my eardrum on another occasion.
- Two travel friends suffered fatal accidents.
While that’s some grim statistics, you do put yourself in higher risk situations than you do at home.
Having that backup when you need it is priceless. None of those situations would be advisable without Insurance.
I can’t talk highly enough of the support World Nomads has given me. They really exceeded expectaions with regular calls to see how I was going. Billing direct to the hospital and physio also helped with my cashflow.
My Travel Insurance Story:
Currently I am in Canada, with a broken knee (31st March). The following is updates as to the treatment and my experience using World Nomads.
Total Costs of Knee & Dental care in my two claims is greater than $5000CAD!
Total Cost to Me: 2 X $100AUD Excess. Got to love it!
Update: 10 August
My claim was processed and in my account within 10 days! Their service has been fantastic.
I also filed a second claim for emergency dental treatment while in Montreal ($400CAD), which was paid into my account just a few days after filing the claim. Awesome!
Update: 22 JulyÂ
I submitted my claim form via email on the 18th of July. I received an email acknowledging receipt on the 22nd and advising that my case manager has 10 business days to act on the information provided.
Update: 6 JulyÂ
World Nomads agreed to cover the knee brace. I had the fitting today. Its the first major expense that I’ve had to pay for and submit a claim for and get reimbursed.
Update: 30 JuneÂ
Met the surgeon again. Swelling has finally subsided and his analysis is that the ACL is still partially connected. This means no surgery. Just rehab + strengthening. Recieved a referral for a Ossur Knee brace ( these range in price from $850 – $1300)
Update: 2 JuneÂ
I met the surgeon to get the results of the MRI. The ACL is completely torn, as well as a tear to the miniscus. Meaning surgery is likely required.
World Nomads agreed to a further 10 sessions of physio w a referral from the surgeon. (Cost $600 CAD)
I see the surgeon again on the 30th. This will decide if surgery is going to happen. Then WN has to decide if surgery happens here or back in Australia.
Update: 15 MayÂ
World Nomads agreed to cover the MRI, so I had that on the 13th.
Tourist price for MRI: $1790CAD!. I’m now superglad that WN is paying the hospital directly! As Im on a working holiday visa, I got the MRI for $800 (resident price).
I have been attending Physio 2X weekly and my knee is progressing. It is still swelling a lot, but with my new knee brace I can work on my flexibility/strength.
Update: 29 April 2009
I started physio yesterday. The Physio called the local world nomads 1800 number and then agreed to bill directly to them. WN has so far offered to cover 10 sessions of physio. Which won’t be enough but its a start.
WN have also called me each week to see how things are going.
The surgeon is still not sure if theres ACL damage, so he has requested an MRI. WN has asked for a referral note from him to consider cover.
Update: 7 AprilÂ
The hospital doesn’t like dealing with insurance companies. But when the head accounts clerk heard I was with World Nomads/Mondial Assistance(Australia) she agreed and said they were good and to pass on her contact details.
Consult with the Orthopaedic Surgeon. The bone has semi detached where the MCL attaches to the bone. At this stage no surgery is required as the bone will heal in time as long as it stays where it is. The Surgeon is not certain if there is ACL damage and will have another consult next week.
Costs in Canadian $:
- Surgeon Consult ~$400
- X-Ray ~$150
- Taxis $21
- April 4 balance $622
- TOTAL:Â $1193
Update: 4 AprilÂ
I took out my WN policy in February.
Unluckily for me, I have broken my MCL (Knee ligament) and am now awaiting to meet the surgeon (7 April). So far WN have been very helpful, calling me to help me with the claims process. I will have more to post as things progress.
Costs so far in Canadian $:
- Emergency Room Visit $350
- X-rays $150 (TBC)
- Prescriptions $27
- Crutches & Leg Brace $80 (TBC)
- Taxi home from hospital $15
- TOTAL:Â $622 ( Out of pocket only for Prescriptions & Taxi)
Tips:
The hospital would prefer you pay up front and then claim back from your insurance. They will however bill you if you are unable to pay immediately. You then pass this bill onto your insurance company.
This is what I chose, as it doesn’t leave me out of pocket. With surgery coming up I’m sure I don’t have the funds to cover it up front.
